Get Wet Report The Addition of soap to water/oil mixture

Water and oil do not mix at normal circumstances. They do not mix due to the fact that water molecules are more attracted to each other than to oil molecules. The addition of a solvent “Soap” provides molecules that are attracted to both water and oil.  The solvent molecule will be attached to water molecule at one end and to oil molecule at the other end making water and oil mix.

I think it’s really creative to have showed a before and after. The interaction of these two liquids is really interesting, and adding a time element to it was very effective.

Nice job capturing the reaction and getting a clear sharp image. Maybe to help make the distinction more clear you could use a darker oil on a white background or a light oil with a dark background.

Your images are well-lit and focus is directed toward the surface of the oil. The side-by-side comparison of the glass before and after the solvent was added allows us to see the reaction clearly. Would a different solvent give different results? What about a larger or smaller amount of oil? Using a tripod or somehow otherwise keeping your camera still and stable will yield even better results for multi-image visualizations like this.

The image show the effect of oil on water and then what happens after soap is add. The image framed better to more clearly high light what was being communicated. Maybe a tight focus on to the surface of the two liquids.

Physics-revealed design and nice shot. But, there is still some space to improve the edited work to make audience to focuse on the part you wanna we to see.

  • The before and after is good. Perhaps you could use a tripod in the future to keep the frame/lines all the same to better exemplify things, as well as a closer shot to the surface of the liquid

The color contrast between oil and water looks great.

The physics you were trying to capture is well thought out. You did well on making the edited image clear. Were you able to repeat the physics?

I like how you displayed the information in the images. They clearly illustrate the flow phenomena. The glare from the glass brings cool reflections to the image.

The image is very clear and the subject is in clear focus which helps to realize the intent of the image. This is a very interesting phenomena that. I would suggest that in the future, if possible, ensure that the background is a little more bland to only draw attention to the element in question. Otherwise nice!

The golden oil and reflections on the glass look really nice. A bigger picture would be nice, but also maybe some shots from different angles? A shot of the underside of the oil would probably be really interesting too. The soap bottle also seems a little unnecessary. Really great documentation and explanation of the science too.

I like the contrast in the oil. I would suggest keeping lighting consistent between the two images and also controlling shadows in the background to remove distractions.

The background is a little distracting. I do like the two contrasting images to see the difference before and after soap is added. But maybe flip them so it’s left to right chronologically.

-Cool to see the effect of soap on the oil on the surface of the water and its polarization. What kind oil and soap did you use? Why not take a progression of the photos to see the movement of the soap on the surface?

The flow is very clear! You did a great job capturing those bubbles forming around the oil. Is this interaction because of surface tension?

I really like the clear distinction between the layers of oil and water, however, it would be nice if the picture was closer up of the subject which is the soap and water. We don’t really need to see the whole wine glass. I would also be curious to see the effects of various different solvents, maybe in a series of phots.

The image has a nice overall view of the liquid, but it would make the purpose of the images more clear if the left image was cropped and zoomed in more so that the viewer can clearly see the affect of adding the soap.

The intent of the picture was very easily noticeable, and it looks like it would be easy to reproduce. I like how well lit the actual oil is while not having glare on the glass. Would adding too much soap have a different effect?

The experiment was an interesting one! However, I think there could potentially be a better impact made if you focused the camera closer to the action! The glasses, although they provide a nice glare, are a bit distracting from the chemistry in this case.

I like how the gold color of the oil contrasts with the white backdrop especially in the left photo. The contrast within the liquid film on the left image is pleasing. However, I am wondering what you are trying to achieve with the multiple images as opposed to choosing the best one. Also, cropping and eliminating white space could be beneficial.

  • I think you have a great idea! I’m not sure I like the soap in the first image, and I think it distracts a little bit form the oil/water experiment. I might switch the order of the images, and have the oil/water without the soap as the first image because that happens before (kind of like reading left to right. One last thing, I would suggest cropping out the white boarder or make it equal on all sides. I think you do a great job of demonstrating the physics of this experiment!

Pleasing color scheme mixing the gold of the oil with the white background. Clear and in focus image with good lighting. Was there a reason for the shape of the glass?

I really like the two images together, having a before and after. It really makes the change in flow very clear. I think playing with the lighting of the surroundings could be helpful to really focus on the oil, and not be distracted by other things.

Like the idea of the picture. Find a good way to enlarge the picture. Could also play around with the coloring to highlight the main part of picture.

  • It is good that you were able to demonstrate the effect that you were looking for as we can see the difference between the photos! Maybe the background could be more isolated and the photo could be closer as it is slightly distracting form the actual flow.

The physics of this are clear and you can see the difference between the two images
It seems like there may have been a clearer way to display the idea, maybe a more intentional background or way to show there is soap in the second rather than the partial soap bottle in the corner
It would be cool if the frame was identical in both images, as they are taken from slightly different perspectives

    Art: Picture looks good!
Flow: The idea is cool and something that you dont think about day to day
Photo: looked good but maybe work on cropping things out of the photo that are not needed

The glow of the oil looks great. Perhaps 1 large photo instead of 2. Be careful of the background in the first picture. Good Job
