A soap bubble sits on top of a thin film of air, which prevents the soap from merging, a process called coalescence. As the air separation reduces, the bubble makes contact and surface tension attracts the bubble closer. Part of the original bubble is pinched off due to shear forces near the top when the bubble is quickly pulled down. Color variations within the film and bubble display fluctuations in film thickness.

2nd Place. I found myself watching this video over and over. The decreasing size of the bubble as it collapses is fascinating. I was unfamiliar with coalescence and found this clip to be a great demonstration. I’m interested to know how the colors in this video were edited.
