Best of Web 2 – Jupiter Polar Vortices

This image shows a series of vortices on Jupiter’s south pole. Not much was known about the atmosphere around Jupiter’s poles before NASA’s JUNO mission took photographs like these, revealing a regular series of vortices surrounding the south pole. These are caused by the fact that the massive planet completes an entire rotation in only 9 hours, thus its atmosphere is dragged along with it and circular motion is caused by the Coriolis effect, similar to hurricanes or cyclones on Earth. This image demonstrates that fluid phenomena are universal and the same types of phenomena can be seen on different planets.
