This photo of a river of lava flowing from the Kilauea Volcano was taken by Miles Morgan just before dawn in Hawaii. This image captures the different layers of lava that form from various cooling rates throughout the river. As the layers of lava on the flow front cool they become more viscous and their flow rate reduces. The other layers of lava compress this flow front giving us the folds on volcanic rock that we can see in this picture

    Third Prize! This picture is beautiful, seeing the yellow blend into the orange and red is absolutely incredible. Plus, lava is such an interesting fluid .
