Two Vortex Rings Colliding in SLOW MOTION - Smarter Every Day 195

Best of Web – Joel Carlson

I saw this video a while back from SmarterEveryDay and I thought it was one of the coolest things ever. In the video, Destin, builds this complex rig to create a situation where 2 vortex rings collide. He wanted to get high quality slow motion video for the shot and spent a ton of time researching how to accomplish this and made many design modifications. Sometimes when the two rings collide a series of secondary vortex rings are created. This is some of craziest stuff to watch and I have no idea why or how it happens. This is such a beautiful phenomena and it is so cool to see it in such a controlled environment.

Second Prize: The slow motion vortex is beautiful to watch, it’s interesting to see the many vortex rings that occur after, and impressive because of the precise work and amount of trial and error needed.

Third Place – I love this YouTube channel so much! I think that Dustin has the best job in the world. The vortices from the colliding colors are an amazing representation of fluid flow.
