This is a video by researchers at the University of Twente in the Netherlands displaying the beauty of a special reaction. An alcoholic droplet containing PMMA is placed on top of an oil bath and begins to evaporate, causing beautiful fluid motion inside the drop. Once most of the alcohol is gone, the PMMA precipitates out leaving behind thin “yarn” like tendrils. I hadn’t seen this type of effect before but am fascinated watching the threads of precipitated PMMA grow as the alcohol disappears. This type of small scale observation is something I want to explore in my own work this semester.

Second – I’ve never seen anything like this before, it’s such a strange reaction and visual that seems almost alive. The difference between the alcohol concentrations was really interesting.
