This image was photographed by the German artist Markus Reugels, who is known for his specialization in the art of creating sculpture-like fluid flow. In a lot of images such as this one shown above, he likes to play with the contrast between a strong black background and a brightly lit/colored fluid. His work with fluid sculptures is fascinating as he has been able to create many images strongly resembling objects such as flowers, mushrooms, jellyfish, fountains, and even crowns. More of his work can be viewed on his website here.

In order to be able to create an image with as much precision to resemble a sculpture, the artist needs to be very well versed in the fluid properties of their fluid of choice, including viscosity, intermolecular forces. Along with this, the artist needs to be aware of the fluids dynamic properties being paired with gravitational and applied forces.

Second Place: It’s amazing this is a fluid and not a sculpture. It’s such a unique shape that almost looks like a mushroom. This image must have been very difficult to capture.

Third – I really like how whimsical this photo looks, with the little antennae on top and the orange fingers on the edge. It looks like a mushroom that you would see in Alice in Wonderland.
