This image is from the article “Emitted droplets and aerosols and their transmission when drying hands under an air-jet dryer”, authored by Zilong Gao, Yuguo Li, Feng Wang, Lin Duanmu a, and Tengfei (Tim) Zhang. (Fig.9)
The photograph, captures with a high-speed camera, shows the process in which moisture on the skin is atomized into droplets and aerosols, followed by their emission, splattering, and dispersion during operation of a high-speed air jet dryer. The original photographs and video documented the fragmentation and splattering of droplets throughout the hand-drying process. After post-processing with Dynamic Studio software (version: 7.6) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) software Trac (version: 2), this image not only reconstructs the splatter trajectories of droplets but also visually illustrates their velocity through color coding. This photograph clearly demonstrates the spray behavior of atomized droplets during hand drying from a scientific perspective, intuitively highlights the potential risk of inhaling atomized droplets when using hand dryers. At the same time, its artistic quality is reflected in the striking color contrasts and elegant curves.
