NASA Wake Turbulence Study

NASA Wake Turbulence Study

This image was taken by Langley Research Center of the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

I chose this image because it has a stunning contrast between the bright blue sky and the red smoke. The image was created by letting the smoke build up, then passing the wing of an airplane through it. This revealed the vortex that is formed at the edge of airplane wings as lift is generated and air rushes in behind the plane to fill in the empty space.

Third Prize: I really like the contrast between the red smoke and the blue sky, The mixing of colors within the vortex is stunning.

Second Prize: This is an amazing demonstration of turbulence using dyed smoke. It’s unique and insightful, and the contrast between the light blue sky and deep crimson smoke is mesmerizing. It’s incredible what flow visualization can do to reveal the unseen.

First Prize; Such a cool interpretation of a wave. Even beyond the swirling motion of the smoke, the motion of plane in the background gives an immediate tell of force and energy behind this flow.

First Prize; I have never visualized the flow of a vortex or seen an image that portrays this with airplanes. This is the coolest image submission I have seen.
