Luke Freyhof – Background Oriented Schlieren

Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) gives us a way to view changes in density within a flow. Here, it allows us to visualize the convective flow around a lighter flame. The lighter flame warms the air around it, causing that warmed air to float upward. In this example, each video frame was compared to the frame before it. The areas of the frames that showed larger changes have a brighter color.
