Lenticular Cloud over West Boulder

Lenticular Cloud over West Boulder

This photo was taken in the University Hill area, west of the CU Boulder main campus (1339 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80302; 40.0°N, –105.28°W), facing the northwest.
The cloud deck visible in the image is an lenticular-type cloud covering nearly the entire sky, characterized by its smooth and uniform underside and clear boundary. Based on its structure and the skew-T figure, the atmosphere at the time was stable.

Very crisp cloud image. This image is similar to mine and it seems this is an orographic formation (caused by topography like mountains). I also really enjoy how the cloud ends uniformly and you include the colorful fall tress below. Great image!

I know that some people might not like the traffic lights, but I like how the beam they’re mounted on lines up with the cloud front. The lights and trees add some great color as well – by themselves, the altostratus clouds can be kind of plain because they’re so smooth and white.
