Golf ball falling in water tank

Luke Freyhof – Falling Golf Ball

2025 Team First

A golf ball with dye placed on its sides is dropped in a tank of water. The dye is pulled off the sides of the golf ball as it falls, allowing portions of the golf ball’s wake to be visualized. Some dye remains at the surface where the golf ball entered the water.

I love the idea of using a golf ball dropping into water to see how it disturbs the surrounding fluid. If you try a stronger (higher-concentration) or darker dye, the pattern might pop more.

I really like the effect given by putting the dye directly on the sides of the ball. I think it would be interesting to see this visualization traced out over a longer drop distance.

  • Hi Luke! I really enjoy how you included the impact site of the golf ball along with the wake of the flow. In addition to showing off your main effect of the vortices formed in the wake of the golf ball I think the impact “crater” shows another interesting phenomena and adds to the overall composition of the image.

I think in addition to the main focal point of the dyed golf ball, I like that you can see the displacement of water where you dropped it in from the top.
