This is an image of atmospheric currents on Jupiter. The image, which has been color-enhanced, details a cloud system in the planet’s northern hemisphere. This image was taken by NASA’s Juno spacecraft on October 24, 2017, from a distance of 11,747 miles from the top of the clouds. What I like most about this image is the grand scale of the image, as each pixel (at full resolution) is approximately 7.75 miles/pixel. Additionally, note the depth of the image.. whiter clouds are at higher altitude, and cast shadows on the layers below.

Second place. The way the swirls of gas interact with each other is incredible. It’s geometric and artistic.

Second Place. Great visualization of a chaotic system, it is incredible to see the parallels between small and large scale systems. This system is very large but still has similar eddys and flow patterns that can be observed in small scale systems here on Earth. The context of the image also helps make this image awe-inspiring, the detail in which we can view another planet is remarkable.

Second Place – The amount of complexity in this image makes it great. The amount of different flows, and the ways that they are all interacting is stunning. The color contrast between the flows is also great.

Second Place – The vortices and swirls here are rarely seen anywhere on Earth which is what makes this image so compelling. The colors are also very aesthetically pleasing.

Third Prize. This picture is really great because at first I didn’t realize that was Jupiter. I was thinking it was mixing of some fluids. This shows that the same general fluid principles still apply on Jupiter, which is cool.

3rd place. Looks like an art work! At the first look, I thought it was a painting of see waves, never thought it would be the atmosphere of Jupiter!

Second place. I think this is a really cool contrast not only in color but perception. Jupiter is usually depicted as orange, red, or tan; but in this image it is a bright blue and silver.

Third Place. Amazing picture of the atmosphere of Jupiter, I never knew there was so much going on with the atmosphere of planets other thane earth.
