I chose this image because it gives a beautiful visual of a fluid transitioning from laminar to turbulent flow. This is a very simple yet common characteristic of fluids in nature. Laminar flow is essentially when the fluid moves smoothly and with similar velocity, which is seen in the left portion of the photo. It then transitions to turbulent flow where the overall velocity of the fluid increases and the kinetic energy overcomes the viscous forces (fluid friction) causing chaotic motion, which is seen in the right portion of the photo. I find it amazing how something so simple can create such an amazing image that highlights the beauty behind chaos and disorder.

1st Place. I really like the structure/frame in Ivan’s image. The flow dynamic catch my eyes to stay focus on.

Second place! Great find! I love how silky smooth the flow is even in the most turbulent region. The cool colors really give the image a mood that goes along with the elegance of the flow.

3rd Place. I like how the image captures the laminar and disrupted flow of the smoke. Great colors as well.

2nd Place. I’ve always wanted to photograph a successful smoke shot which is done here perfectly.
