This is my attempt at the Black Snake experiment. This involved mixing a 1:4 ratio of baking soda to sugar on top of a sand mound mixed with lighter fluid and ignited with a flame. Once the baking soda is heated to a critical temperature, carbon dioxide gas is released causing a pressure differential and in turn, the little tendrils to grow. The tendrils are black due to the caramelization of the sugar by the heat.
