IV 2 – Team Assignment – Maxwell Patwardhan

This image was captured using a planar-laser and a fog machine. Focusing the camera was a difficult task, as it was necessary to exactly focus within the plane of the laser. Safety precautions were taken in order to prevent the laser from burning our retinas, mostly in the form of well-placed bedsheets and glasses. One person operated the camera, while another puffed smoke from the fog machine and a third operated the laser by controlling its intensity. Post processing was not too difficult, the blackpoint was adjusted to reduce noise, and the RGB curve was manipulated in order to bring up the contrast and let there be noticeable difference between each tendril of smoke. The image was also cropped in order to better focus on the subject.

The colors you chose for this match really well and allows the details to shine.

I like the directionality of this image. The smoke getting thicker from right to left really evokes a movement in that direction.

I like the decision to keep the more vibrant purple and the very dark background, as well as just the choice of this particular image because it has fun shapes.

I like the contrast you were able to get in this image, with both the shapes and the affect of the bright blue on the dark background.

The vivid, fluorescent color really pops against the dark black background. The hues of purple make the dense areas really stand out. The vortex really stands out with this choice.
I think the dark black area to the left and the tailing swirls to the right really make the image contrast really well.

I like the choice to leave some of the red tones in to make the image more colorful. I think playing with the black point served the image very well

The shapes in this photo are really great: there’s a central “blob” of fog, and then a series of parasitic clouds and tendrils coming off of it. Really interesting!

I like how crisp the edges of the smoke are. It’s easy to see where the smoke begins and the black background ends.
