Photograph taken by Laurence Demaison in 1998, as part of her ‘Les Eautres’ (The Others) photo album [1].
Laurence Demaison took her photos by building a glass tank filled with water, standing behind it, and disturbing the tank. All distortions were achieved live with no editing, so each photograph is up to chance. The water creates refractions, bending parts of her face. I chose this photo because the elements of reflection, refraction, and moving water play a crucial role in producing her haunting, ethereal portraits.

Third Prize, this is a very cool way of using fluid flow in art. The patterns and distortions created by the surface of the fluid add so much to what would have been a normal portrait picture.
Second Prize; Great way of combining art and flow visualization; Beautiful piece with a lot of meaning and amazing lightning work.
Second Prize. This is a beautiful piece of art, and its use of a dark background, with a brightly illuminated face to highlight the ripples in the water is outstanding. The use of a face that also gives a sense of how the light is being refracted through the liquid leads to an ethereal effect.
Third Prize – The patterns created from the disturbed water make such a commonplace image (a face) feel so intriguing and alien. It’s a brilliant way to capture the cool patterns of water ripples in a way that feels fresh and new. The black and white color palette really works for this image too.
Third Prize; I think this is a great example of something any student could do with few materials. I also think it could inspire some Get Wet assignment ideas.
