Segment of “Swarm” by Cosmodernism

This clip is a segment of the video “Swarm” by Kamil Czapiga also known as Cosmodernism online. The full video was done as partnership with the European Space Agency and includes sounds that are sonifications of Earth’s magnetic field. This video uses ferrofluids and inks that were manipulated with a magnet.

This video highlights a few different types of ferrofluid instabilities. The main one being labyrinthian instabilities. These labyrinthian instabilities are very interesting to study and can be described using ferrohydrodynamics.

What I like about this video as an art piece is the contrast between the ferrofluid and the inks. The dark ferrofluid creates a clear marked boundary that moves around creating various complex patterns that are highlighted with the bright colored background.

First Place. The chaotic motion is quite mesmerizing. The geometries that appear seem to be non uniform and constantly reorganizing. The boundaries are constantly changing and the red vs black contrast draws in the eye as it is aesthetically pleasing.

Second Prize. This is a fascinating blend of science and art. The ferrofluid shows instabilities, especially the maze-like forms, that change under the pull of a magnet. These shapes are both visually strong and scientifically important. The dark ferrofluid and the bright inks create a sharp contrast. The boundaries feel alive, shifting and reorganizing into complex patterns. This shows how ferrohydrodynamics can be understood not only as physics but also as an artistic experience.
