This image captures the aftermath of cornstarch as it falls through water. Several wakes form as the cornstarch droplets dive deeper into the tank, resulting in turbulent flow.

I really like seeing the multiple flows in this image. The trails left behind show off some cool patterns which have some interesting repeating structures in what at first seems chaotic.

Great picture Alana! I wonder how the image would have turned out differently if the water were changed between each “trial”. The pre-suspended cornstarch might be making the background lighter and decreasing the contrast in your image.

  • Hi Alana, I really enjoy the contrast in this image between the white cornstarch and blue background, as well I think the slight motion blur in parts of the image adds to a sense of movement and visualizes the different speeds of the flow of cornstarch that I think adds to the visualization overall.
