Visualization of a shock wave on the head of a mallet using supersonic flow from an Air Duster. Z-type Schlieren setup was used to image the changes in air density.

This flow visualization was created with the assistance of Brian Terasaki and Hank Goodman.

This is an awesome video. Amazing how in focus you got it to be. As I mentioned during the critique, I believe the term for the flow pattern on the mallet is a radial outflow that is fast and unstable, then it undergoes a “hydraulic jump” where it transforms into slower stable flow. Great video!

I never knew that compressed air cans are able to make supersonic flow! The flow re-circulation around the edges of the mallet also add more valuable detail to the video.
