This homemade “lava lamp” was captured by filling a glass with 1/3 colored water and 2/3 vegetable oil. Once the mixture was settled, an effervescent antacid tablet was dropped into the glass. As the tablet dissolves it created colored bubbles that would float to the top of the oil. Once the gas was released the water that had been stuck to the bubbles would sink slowly back down to the bottom of the oil. The picture shows “streaks” and “columns” of the colored water that is still suspended in the oil and is either still flowing to the top or waiting to settle back to the bottom.
