The photo shown above was taken with a fog machine, a planar-laser, and a dark cloth background to avoid reflection of the laser. The planar-laser was a bit difficult for us to work with, as it was hard to tell what point to focus onto. Eventually, we ended up hanging a piece of cloth from the celling to signify the physical location that the laser was being projected.
