In this photo the artist, Adrian Borda, captures a unique perspective of light entering through the f-holes in an old cello. The air is seeded with light particles with sufficient residence time to reveal the unsteady flow structures in the cello. The artist has used a moderate exposure time to allow the particles to sweep out path lines, unveiling the mixing of the air. The image gives the impression of standing in a wood beam construction room and the fact that the particle paths do not break this illusion unveils an important fact about fluid dynamics: flow structures are scalable across an enormous range of lengths. From the tiny Kolmogorov microscale to the vast width of interstellar nebulae the same flow structures appear on widely different scales in nature.

In addition to the very creative perspective of this piece I love the underlying implications about the extreme scalability of fluid dynamics.
