Best of Web SP18 – Close-up, Slo-mo Welding

Having learned welding last semester, I was mesmerized by the fluid phenomena that happened when melting metal with an arc. This particular film interested me because it clearly depicts the interactions between the electromagnetic field (depicted by the plasma in the arc) and the gas ejected from the welder. The solidifying of the metal is not as easily seen, but one can see the flux-cored electrode melting and dripping from the welder.

This video has a very alien feel to me, like a UFO depositing blob packages. Among the many oddly satisfying videos on the web, this one struck me as unique and inspiring.

This video comes from a project by Thomas Meier on hs-movies.de

    Third place for me.
Cool how you can see the fluids surface tension break when adding more.

2nd place – Using the technique of arc welding in this video shows the power of the electrical current the cause the metal to melt. It has been said, but it does just feel like an alien space ships tractor beam taking up poor creatures getting kidnapped.

1st place – super cool to see welding from something other than through those masks!

1st place. I was always interested in watching the flow of liquid metal, and never thought about watching a slo-mo welding! Liquid metal act like a thick and viscous liquid, even though it is liquid but I feel it still carries some of the solid metals properties. I like how you described it as UFO depositing blob packages!

2nd Place. I like the juxtaposition of having a metal interact like like a liquid would. the blob like behavior along with the gas ejected by the plasma gives off, like you mentioned, an alien like visual.

3rd Place. I think there is a ton of scientific and aesthetic value in this video. I wonder how hard it would be to either seed the gaseous flow around the welder or come up with a lighting technique to illuminate the molten metal.
