This image displays an impressive fluid flow produced by an exploding lava bubble.  The thermal distortion in the bottom portion of the photo shows the magnitude of heat and energy driving the turbulent movement of the magma.  The elevated temperatures also produce beautiful vibrant colors and lower viscosity material capable of this erratic flow.

  • Third place – the colors, crispness, and flow patterns are beautiful. For some reason, I guess I am attracted to the images that you wouldn’t usually be able to see or photograph yourself.

First Place! I don’t know if it is just the perspective the photo was taken from or not, but I love the way the lava seems to be larger than life and fill the whole sky. The way the individual strands separate like hair is just mesmerizing and the natural color gradient caused by the lava cooling as it moves away from the source is something else! I think I found my new desktop background!

First place! This Pollock-like flow captures the eye with deep blues in the background showing of the contrast and power of the lava in the foreground. This image instantly caught my eye and it a well dereved first place!

First Prize! Seeing the “strings” of lava with different brightness is really amazing.

First Prize! This is a beautiful image in many ways. The flow being captured is molten rock, which has incredibly interesting fluid properties. The flow also is emitting light itself, which makes the dynamics of the image incredible. The colors are also vibrant and beautiful, and the flow is exciting and quick.
