This is an image of combustion taking place outside of a Ruben’s Tube (or Standing Wave Flame Tube) with a C note playing through the tube. At certain frequencies, a standing wave can form within the tube, and create ares of high and low pressure, demonstrated visually by the peaks and troughs seen in the photo above.

The Ruben’s tube originally came about as a early physics demonstration and experiment. This is because it demonstrates the effects of pressure driven flow and the behavior of sound as a wave. The background physics, however, is fairly complicated because the time averaged pressure is equal throughout the tube, but the peaks and troughs don’t move, and don’t have obvious time dependence when a single note (frequency) is being played.

The colors complement well with the contrast of the background

The fact that you can see the full motion of the wave is my favorite aspect of this picture.

I like how the solid blue line near the bottom becomes narrower towards the upper right of the image. The focus seems best in the center but is less in focus towards either end of the tube; perhaps try increasing your f-number?

I like the reflection on the front face of the tube that has a bluish tint, as well as the yellow/red reflection on the top from the flames. The diagonal and decreasing width of the blue streak is very aesthetically pleasing.

Love the angle that it was shot with. The pattern and reflection on the tube looks really nice.

This image utilizes a strong diagonal! I love it and the image is high quality, nice exposure, great focus, great colors!

Having the tube angled adds a cool element to the flames.

It seems like the focus is on only the center flames instead of all the flames. Was this an intentional focus choice? I like the colors of the tube a lot!

The angle that this is out makes for an interesting point of view on the image.

I think it’s really amazing how you can see the “C” note from the tube and see the frequency.

I like the blue color of the tube. It gives a good contrast to the red flame.

I like that you can see the harmonic through the tube from the flames, and it is also interesting how you chose a lower f stop which added some depth of field.

The angle at which you took the picture looks really cool, makes it look like there is a wind effect or something.

Interesting image. Maybe make the background completely black as it it slightly distracting
