Featured above is bioluminescence at Pirates Bay in south-east Tasmania.
This beautiful sight was caused by a bloom of bioluminescence from noctiluca scintillans. They are single-celled marine organisms that release blue light when disturbed. In this case, they are being disturbed by the movement of the waves. The bioluminescence are acting as particle tracking for the flow of the waves.
