The flow I captured here is more accurately described as lack of a flow, one we take for granted every day. Part of the Sun’s glow, the yellow and oranges captured here, is the result of solar plasma being pushed up from deeper within the Sun by convection cells. Sunspots, the brown dots in the center and 7 o’clock position, form when magnetic fields generated by the Sun are locally strong enough to suppress the currents driving convection. The plasma in the affected region then cools relative to the surrounding photosphere and emits less vibrantly.
