This photo of a flame on a black background, taken by Martin Adams, stood out to me as a perfect example of a balance between art and science. The first thing that struck me was the juxtaposition between the bright, orange flame against a pure black background, which draws all attention to the subject of the photo: a turbulent flame. The science behind this photo fascinates me because flames vary greatly depending on a number of factors, including fuel and oxidant mixture as well as flow velocity, yet a very specific set of conditions led to flame that was captured in this photo.
