Clouds is such an interesting atmospheric phenomenon. They can take many forms and shape, as well as giving off many hues of color when being hit by the right light. This image, captured by Witta Priester, exemplifies all of that. The sunlight coming in from the right side of the image creates shadow and depth, which makes this pleasing to look at. The sunlight also provides hues of orange and purple, which compliments the blue sky on the horizon. These unusual low level clouds are called Asperatus clouds. This particular type of cloud has a vertical structure underneath, which leads to the creation of the layered wave-like flow.

This is my second choice. I love the depth and the contrast in the clouds. The shape really stands out because of the shadows and highlights.

This if my number one for best of web. The waves we can see in these clouds are truly awe-inducing. I would love to know more about what conditions create these clouds, they are so interesting.

2nd place for best of web. I really enjoy the composure of this image. Being framed by trees, the image evokes a sense of natural peacefulness, but the vivid colors in the clouds add excitement and wonder. I think the natural aspect of this image and this cloud formation are fantastic. I didn’t know that these kinds of ‘vertical clouds’ existed and they are astounding. I really like that the photographer was able to be in the right place at the right time to capture this picture.
